Backpack choice: Camelbak manticore - thoughts?
I have done a fair bit of research on the right pack to buy. My intuition is leading me to the camelbak manticore. This is not soley a trekking pack, it is on-the-line between a trekking pack and a tactical or bugout pack. This interests me a lot. I will likely use it mostly for trekking/survival camping but I also want a good high quality bag packed and ready to go in case of emergency.
This pack is only really a couple pounds heavier than the lightweight packs specifically designed for trekking, at 7lbs 15oz. Its volume is very comparible at 4200CU or 68.8L.
What I like is the extremely rugged design, I should never have to buy another. I also like the MOLLE or PAL webbing throughout this unit, allowing me to attach pouched anywhere I like, for instance my maps / radio / canteen / Glock / etc..
(some of this is more for the survival pack side, rather than trekking).
Thoughts on this pack??
You, sir, have good taste in backpacks! Kudos to you for wanting a "real" backpack that will actually hold up to more than two weekends of use per year. I like the Manticore, but the Cerberus really does it for me, as it's a top-loader, but still, I would definetly rock the Manticore. I have a Camelbak HAWG (military style w/MOLLE webbing attachment points) and it's been one of the best day packs I've ever had. My only regrets are that it's better suited for folks with shorter torsos, and the zippers are a little small (#10 would be perfect). I'm thinking when my big backpacking pack finally dies, I might go with one of the Camelbak tactical bags.
