What is a good quality hand gun that is lightweight but still powerful enough?

I do not know much about weapons, but what brand and / or type of handgun you suggest? I need to be fairly light, but still powerful. All this advice is exactly I was looking for, so I really do not know which to choose as the best answer ... Oh, and I intend to carry the concealed weapon that I travel across the country by bike and hitchhike. Thank you all!

You do not know why anyone would propose a model 1911, since you specifically asked the lightweight. You'd be hard pressed to find a gun heavier than a 1911. Take a look at Kahr models did. They are roughly as light as you can get, and you get a good one in 9mm, .40, .45 ACP or even, but I recommend the 9mm for a beginner. The Glock model 27 is a very small, light .40 cal (half the weight of a model 1911) but it is still a lot of weight to carry concealed.
